Academic Requirements

Students are required to complete and pass four core academic classes each school year - Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Core courses differ by grade level and student readiness. Students are placed into advanced level courses based on FAST scores, teacher recommendation, and previous academic performance. For additional information on middle school requirements, see the Student Progression Plan. OCPS has created a student progression handbook for your review.

  • High School Promotion
    •  To be promoted from eighth grade involves the successful completion of three years of English, math, science and social studies.  Failed courses must be recovered before exiting middle school.  Please see the school counselors about course recovery options.

    • You can find more information from the FLDOE site HERE

  • TSMS offers a variety of advanced, accelerated, and high school level courses. The placement in advanced/accelerated and high school level courses is dependent on academic performance demonstrated through standardized test scores and final course grades.

  • The Cambridge Assessment International Education logo features a shield and text.

Through the Cambridge program, OCPS middle school students receive an international education experience developed by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

What’s the Deal with PreAICE Cambridge Classes?

Imagine taking college-level classes while you're still in middle school – that’s what PreAICE Cambridge courses are all about! They're like a special program from Cambridge University, an important school around the world. It's designed to give you super-strong learning skills and help you get ready for tough high school courses and even college later on.

How are PreAICE Courses Different From Regular Classes?

These classes are pretty intense, like honors level, and they get you ready for high school level classes. They cover the same topics as regular honors classes, but they often focus more on writing and critical thinking, which helps you learn new things and come up with new ideas.

What does all of this have to do with High School?

Taking these classes now is a great way to prepare for advanced coursework in high school, but it doesn't mean that you have to take AICE classes in high school too. The choice is yours!

    * Our school offers PreAICE courses, not the actual AICE courses. AICE classes are taken in high school.

How do PreAICE Courses Affect my Grades?

They’re graded on a special scale. Think of them as being a little bit tougher than regular classes. Here's how it breaks down:

    Regular Classes (4.0 scale) A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0

    Honors Classes (5.0 scale) A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0

    PreAICE Classes (5.0 scale) A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0

    • PreAICE Classes at our school are weighed at the same 5.0 scale as Honors level courses.
